Immediate Questions

Answering these five key questions after a lung cancer diagnosis could help bring order and calm to a stressful situation.

A lung cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming, but knowing the questions to ask yourself and others can help keep your mind on track and ready for the next step of the journey.

1. WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS I NEED TO DO?

First, slow down, take a step back and consider the big picture. You probably have a lot of questions; finding someone to talk to or writing in a journal can help you collect and prioritize them.

2. WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT?

Ask your doctor what you can expect as you begin treatment. You may also want to reach out to support groups to connect with patients who have gone through similar experiences. They can give you a better sense of what to anticipate.

3. DO I NEED TO SPEAK WITH OTHER DOCTORS?

You could seek a second opinion on your diagnosis and treatment plan, and you may need to expand your health care team to include specialists. The doctor who delivered your diagnosis should be able to give you referrals for any specialists you may need. Also, check with your health insurer and local hospitals, both of which may be able to recommend oncologists and other specialists in your area.

4. WHEN SHOULD I TELL MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY?

There’s no hard and fast rule about when to share your diagnosis with the important people in your life, it all comes down to your comfort level. The key is to wait until you feel ready. Think about what information you want to share and what you’d prefer to keep private. Also, consider which people you want to tell in person and who you’d feel comfortable telling over a phone call, text, or email. Most people start with family and close friends, who can often help sort priorities and may also be able to help you navigate finding answers to your questions as they arise.

5. WHAT SHOULD I DO ABOUT MY JOB?

Speak with your boss and your employer’s human resources department so you understand your company’s policies and your options before you start treatment. Your doctor may also have advice about the ways your treatment might affect your ability to work.
