Getting Ready for Treatment

Take time to prepare your body and mind

The time between a lung cancer diagnosis and beginning treatment may not be easy, but there are steps you can take to make it less hard. Preparing your body, mind, and home can help keep you calm as your treatment approaches, and help pave the way for recovery. Here are some steps you can take:

ELIMINATE THE UNKNOWNS

  1. Research your treatment. Knowing what’s going to happen—and why it will happen—may help relieve anxiety and reduce stress.
  2. Talk to your doctor about any possible outcomes so you aren’t caught by surprise.
  3. Find support groups or reach out to other patients who have been through treatment. Ask what people wish they had known after their diagnosis.

GET YOUR BODY READY

  1. Stay active. Even moderate exercise may help with recovery.
  2. Eat healthy, balanced meals to help make your body as strong as possible going into your treatment.
  3. Establish healthy sleeping patterns: Try to go to bed about the same time every night and aim for eight hours of sleep.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR SOUL, TOO

  1. Seek out family and friends who will listen to you and provide the emotional support you need.
  2. Reflect on what’s important to you and make time for the activities that mean the most.
  3. Think about the best ways to process your feelings. You may want to try different approaches—such as meditation or the arts—to see what works best for you.

NEST

  1. Prepare your home so you can recover in comfort. Find a place to rest where you don’t have to move far for essentials.
  2. Have plenty of bland food and drink options on hand.
  3. Take care of your caregivers: Encourage friends and family to support them while they support you.
