Connection & Care

It takes a village to help you cope with lung cancer. Let a supportive network of family members and friends make your path a little easier.

During difficult times, it’s natural to turn to a network of support. Friends, family members, neighbors and other patients can play an important role, whether they’re providing rides to and from treatment, or simply sending caring thoughts. Here are some ways to build your support system:

Get a grocery helper

Friends may be eager to fill your fridge with casseroles, which can be a godsend when you’re not feeling up to cooking. But sometimes what you really need is for someone to stop by the grocery store and pick up yogurt, popsicles or crackers. Certain members of your support system—especially people who pass your house routinely—may be glad to be on call for this kind of help.

Make conversation

Texts, phone or video calls, and visits with friends and relatives can often provide a healthy distraction and a feeling of comfort. Staying in touch and seeing friends and loved ones—even for short visits—may lift your spirits and keep your relationships strong.

Let others pitch in

Neighbors and friends in your immediate area are a great resource for helping out with day-to-day tasks. Let them pitch in with dog-walking, lawn-mowing, childcare and other items on your to-do list. Taking some of these chores off your plate while you’re going through treatment can free you up to focus on rest and recovery.

Find a sounding board

Sharing experiences, expressing your feelings and asking questions can alleviate stress, especially when you’re talking to someone who relates to what you’re going through. Online forums can help patients connect with each other; some allow users to remain anonymous, which may help spark more-candid discussions.

Expand your network

Many hospitals, community centers and faith-based organizations offer support groups where you may find other patients who can offer advice, encouragement and understanding. You may even meet new friends who become a lasting part of your network.
